Rosie and The Hug That Hurt

Purpose:
A picture book for parents and caregivers to start the conversation of covert harm with a child. This book is intended to be read by an adult to the child or alongside the read-along story time on YouTube.  Both have discussion questions included at the end.

Visual warning:

In some images, depictions of harm (scratches and cuts relevant to being a hedgehog) are represented by red lines and dots on the abdomen. Please keep in mind for sensitive viewers.

Accessibility:

The Atkinson Hyperlegible font, recommended by The Braille Institute for low-vision readers, is utilized in large print.

Storyline:
Rosie is a bright, cheery hedgehog who loves playing with her friends at school. Recently, her behavior has changed. Her teacher, Ms. Prickles, and her friends have noticed that some days, she is very emotional and wants to hide.
Although initially afraid to tell, Rosie speaks up about the source of her pain.  When she does, Ms. Prickles and her friends offer compassion and guidance, showing Rosie that a path to healing can be found when we share our hurts with those we trust.
